Unfortunately for these detractors, Hawking's proof also held true for any reasonable amendment to Einstein's classical theory. The only escape from his conclusions appeared to be to argue that classical physics was inadequate to describe cosmology, and that quantum theory would be required instead - an idea that upset his detractors even more.
